Issue/Question

How can BHSU continue to lead in sustainability while protecting our campus and community for the future?

Environment

  • Our location in the Black Hills provides clean air, water, and natural beauty. BHSU has already made progress in recycling, renewable energy, green buildings, and sustainable food.

Cause

Challenges include energy use, waste, water demand, and the growing effects of climate change. Without action, costs rise and our environment is at risk.

Resolution

The Sustainability Master Plan sets goals for 2030:

  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions 33% by 2030; carbon neutral by 2050.
  • Save water through conservation and efficient irrigation.
  • Earn 4-star Green Restaurant certification and grow the local food economy.
  • Manage 25% of campus grounds sustainably.
  • Strengthen climate resiliency and community wellbeing.

These steps will reduce costs, protect resources, and keep BHSU a sustainability leader.
