Read&Write

Black Hills State University faculty, staff, and students have access to a literacy support software called Read&Write which they can install on their work and personal devices. Read&Write can assist with reading onscreen text, proofreading, and many other tasks related to literacy.

Faculty and Staff

  • Faculty and Staff can install Read&Write by searching for "Software Center" on their BHSU computer, clicking on the Read&Write application, and selecting Install
  • Please contact the Help Desk if you have any issues installing Read&Write on your BHSU computer
  • Faculty and Staff are also able to use Read&Write on their personal devices. To install Read&Write on a personal machine, please follow the instructions below for your device type.

Read&Write for Students

Read&Write is managed by BHSU and already linked to your BHSU email account, so there is no registration process, just follow the links below. For more information on Read&Write features, view this video.

Read&Write has a variety of different products available to fit your needs. Read&Write is available as software that can be installed on your Windows PC or Mac, a browser plug-in for Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, a PDF Reader called OrbitNote, and an ePub Reader that is capable of reading your eTextbooks.

Installing Read&Write on a Windows Computer

  1. Go to Read&Write for Education in a web browser

  2. Click on “Try Read&Write today”

  3. Select “Windows” and click on “Read&Write (US English)”

  4. A download will start, once that finishes click on the downloaded file

  5. Go through the installer

  6. Once installed, search for “Read&Write” in the lower left search bar and double-click on Read&Write

  7. When Read&Write opens, click the icon at the top of the screen and select “Sign in with Microsoft”

  8. Type in your full BHSU email address and hit “Next”

  9. Select “Work or school account”

  10. On the login box, type in your BHSU email address and password

  11. Now you are licensed to use Read&Write

Installing Read&Write on a Mac

  1. Go to Read&Write for Education in a web browser

  2. Click on “Try Read&Write today”

  3. Select “Mac OS” and click on “Install”

  4. A download will start, once that finishes click on the downloaded file

  5. A window will open, click and drag the Read&Write icon into the picture of the folder

  6. Go to the Applications folder and double-click on Read&Write

  7. Select Open on the warning box

  8. When Read&Write opens, select “Sign in with Microsoft”

  9. Type in your full BHSU email address and hit “Next”

  10. Select “Work or school account”

  11. On the login box, type in your BHSU email address and password

  12. Now you are licensed to use Read&Write

OrbitNote (formerly known as TextHelp PDF Reader) can read PDF documents from your computer.

For more information on the web-based product, vist the OrbitNote webpage on the TextHelp website.

  • Go to the OrbitNote website.

  • Click Sign in with Microsoft

  • Log in using your BHSU email credentials.

The ePub reader will read your eTextbooks aloud. To install the ePub reader, please follow the directions below:
