One Question D2L Quiz

Summary

This guide will help you create a one question quiz in D2L, which will fulfill the pre-census online activity requirement. This guide is for courses that only use D2L for posting the course syllabus.

Need to create a one question D2L quiz.

Environment

Resolution

  1. Log into D2L and go to your course.
     
  2. From the green navigation bar, click on Assessments > Quizzes:

     
  3. In the Quizzes area, click on the New Quiz button:

     
  4. On the New Quiz page:
    1. Add a Quiz Title
    2. Under Grade Out Of, click the drop down arrow next to Not in Grade Book > Add to Grade Book.  Assign points to the quiz. 
    3. Add a Due Date (this needs to be census date or before)
    4. Add a description, if you would like.

    5. Under the Questions section, click Create New button > New Question > Select your question type.  For this example, we will use True or False.

      1. A pop-up window will appear, where you can enter your Question Text, Answer, and point value.  If you are only asking 1 question, the question should have the same point value as the quiz.

      2. Click Save.  You will now see the question listed under the Questions section:

    6. On the right side of the New Quiz page, click the arrow to expand the Availability Dates & Conditions box:

      1. Add a Start Date- this can’t be before the first day of classes.
      2. Add an End Date- this should be the same as your Due Date you set earlier (census date or before).
      3. Check the box to Add availability dates to the Calendar.
      4. No other settings are needed under Availability Dates & Conditions.

    7. On the right side of the New Quiz page, click the arrow to expand the Timing & Display box:
      1. If you want, you can check the box for Set time limit.  Since this is a one question quiz, the time limit does not need to be long.
      2. Leave setting as Asynchronous and Auto-submit when time is up.
      3. No other settings are needed under Timing & Display.

    8. On the right side of the New Quiz page, click the arrow to expand the Attempts & Completion box:
      1. Click on Manage Attempts (making the changes below will allow students to take the quiz multiple times if they have issues without you having to make any other changes.
        1. Change Attempts Allowed to Unlimited.
        2. Change Over Grade Calculation to Highest Attempt
        3. Click OK
      2. No other settings are needed under Attempts & Completion.
    9. On the right side of the New Quiz page, no changes are needed for Evaluation & Feedback.
       
  5. Click Save and Close.
     
  6. In the main Quizzes area, you’ll see the quiz you just created.  Click on the drop down arrow next to the quiz > select Make Visible to Users.

    1. You’ll then notice the hidden icon goes away:

  7. Create a News item, so students know about the syllabus and quiz.
    a. Back on the Course Homepage, click the drop-down arrow next to News > New News Item.  Add a Headline (this is like a subject line) and Content Information.  You should inform students on where you posted the syllabus and that they are required to take the syllabus quiz > click the Publish button.
