Body

Issue/Question

Does BHSU provide gun or firearm storage?

Environment

  • Firearm Storage

Cause

A university employee, student, or guest wishing to store firearms who does not have a personal vehicle in which to do so, or who wish to store in an alternate location from their vehicle, may store their firearm with the University Public Safety Office storage facility at no charge. Storage at Public Safety offers security advantages, such as secured and locked storage, as well as Public Safety personnel’s expertise and training in safe firearm handling.

Resolution

Public Safety Office will provide storage of firearms belonging to BHSU students. For the safety of the property, students and Public Safety Staff will follow the following procedures:

  1. Firearms may be checked in/out by appointment only (Mon-Fri, 8am-4pm)
Note:  Students and guests are required to call Public Safety at 605.541.6988 prior to their arrival to ensure a staff member is available to assist them
  2. All students checking firearms in/out must have their BHSU Student ID. Guests must have a valid government issued photo ID
  3. When checking firearms out, students or guests must also have the Weapon Storage Receipt that they received when they initially checked in their firearm
  4. Firearms to be stored must be in a soft case or sock, (no hard cases) and have a trigger lock attached
  5. Firearms without a trigger lock attached will not be accepted
  6. Loaded firearms will not be accepted
  7. If the firearm is discovered to be stolen, then Public Safety staff will place the firearm into evidence and may not release the firearm until the conclusion of an appropriate investigation
  8. No firearm will be released to individuals displaying signs of impairment
  9. No ammunition will be accepted for storage - firearms only
