Issue/Question

How can you help BHSU decrease the waste stream by 25 percent?

Environment

  • Campus Recycling program

Resolution

BHSU Recycling Goal:  Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, and Re-purpose to decrease waste stream by 25%

  • Use the Trash Buddy system that makes desk side recycling easy and convenient.
    • Place recyclable goods in the blue recycling bins. These include paper, glass, plastics numbered 1-7, and cans.
    • Any additional waste, such as Styrofoam, candy wrappers, or disposable cups, belongs in the Trash Buddy attachment.
    • All receptacles will be emptied by employees into the closest larger recycling bins/containers/quads that are located in departments and buildings throughout the campus.
    • The custodial staff will empty the large centrally located recycling bins. The frequency of the larger bin pickups will vary from 1 to 5 days per week according to demand.

  • Below is a list of acceptable recyclable materials:
    • Shredded paper: gather already-shredded paper in clear plastic bag(s)
    • Cardboard: cereal, cracker, and pizza boxes, shipping boxes, paper bags, notebook covers; remove packaging materials, flatten boxes
    • Office paper, card stock, manila folders, junk mail, newspaper, magazines, glossy paper, brown paper bags (NO paper towels or tissues): Remove non-paper materials (metal clips, plastic bindings, metal spirals, plastic sleeves, laminated paper, etc). Small staples and paper clips are OKAY. Plastic windows in envelopes are OKAY.
    • Paper cups: Empty, rinse
    • Paperback books & journals: Remove non-paper materials (e.g. shrink wrap)
    • Hardcover books: Remove non-paper materials (e.g. plastic bookmarks)
    • Glass bottles and jars: Empty, rinse, attach metal lids that screw on, place loose lids inside the can like a soup can and crimp the top to trap them inside
    • Metal cans, clean aluminum pans and foil: Empty, rinse, ball foil
    • Cartons: Empty, rinse, landfill lids
    • Plastic bottles, tubs, and jugs (NO plastic bags or anything not a bottle, tub, or jug): Empty, rinse, attach lids
    • Electronic waste: needing to dispose of e-waste, such as refrigerators, microwaves, computers, TVs, printers, and air conditioners you need to submit a E-Waste Service Work Request requesting these items be recycled, reused or disposed a minimum seven (7) days in advance of the desired pickup time.

  • Note:
    • Please consider donating desirable books, gently used clothing and non-perishable food items to the BHSU Free Store, located in the Student Union.
    • Consider bringing plastic bags to the plastic recycling bins at Walmart.
